September-October 2014

A trip to Turin, Camogli and Genoa in September where the days are warm and the food was tasty,  had stolen the time for an event. Here a sample of the cultural riches and the nature which we had enjoyed:

Home again, the days are gradually and noticeably shorter. In the garden the bugs have beaten me to a harvest of pak choi and made the batch look unappetising:

However, there are 2 winter melons, one with a diameter of about 34 cm. Under ideal conditions this melon could grow up to around 40 kg. This one in the photo is too far away from that and so it will have to wait another couple of weeks.

The lemon grass did well and is ripe for use. It will be harvested in time for Nenek’s 7th Event to celebrate the success and resistance of this crop in our cold zone and a relatively cold summer.

Naturally the more demanding herbs which are grown on the balcony will do their share in this event:

Where: Oerlikon, 5 minutes’ walk from Oerlikon Railway Station

 

Aperitif

Starter – Nenek’s special spice fruit cubes in edible spoons

Nenek’s harvest: Nasi ulam; rice, shreded chicken in fermented black bean sauce, various herbs from the garden and balcony, vegetables and sprouts from Oerlikon market, chilli sambal, mild curry sauce served in the traditional way
